Epic side-project #2: 10-page comic book! Everything’s hand-inked and ink washed. (The lettering will be, too, when I get to it. I’m doing my speech bubbles blank on the original bristol, and will use animation cells for the lettering). The finished book will be on sale soon

WIP :: Wild Wagoner

This semester I’m working on animating a film to go along with The Wild Wagoner, a fiddle tune by mountain man Jilson Setters. This is a collaboration with the school of music, specifically for the American Anthology Project “Reeinvisioning America”. I decided to do a sort of caricatured biography on Jilson for my story… here are some screencaps of the film so far, which will be playing at CalArts around the 8th of December

I know I knowwww, I’m way behind on posts– well in my defense I’ve been cranking out colored scenes (approx. 4 a day, in which case I’ve got about 5 days left at this rate to complete the entire film!) This is what a traditional animator does.
Over and over and over and over.
I just wanted give a feel of what it is to see your animated frames come to life when flipping/rolling them manually.
And I would not complain if someone found a way to give me a second left arm, so I could flip more than five pages at a time

Finally, the complete (and well-overdone, or cooked) maquette!

After taking great caution when packing her to take her to school, I painted her with Liquitex Acrylics. In order to get the ruffles of her dress, I bought some iradescent ribbon, painted it (to tint it purple), cut and folded it and then put it on her dress with a hot glue gun. (Same with the golden belts).

Compare the finished product with the concept paintings!

So I’m setting out to write a children’s book, and fully illustrate it and have it published by Scholastic. At least, that’s the goal. Working on the basic character design right now; already have the plot figured out; the style is going to be whimsical and anachronistic– I’m going for a steampunk atmosphere… Which ultimately may confuse historically-geared kids, but the point of the book is to teach some basic art fundamentals. Wish me luck
